Lists and bibliographies

A list is a named set of articles: reading for a review, the references of a project, a course syllabus. Cabdell offers two kinds, and you choose for each list when you make it (DECISIONS D-122):

Private list Public list
Where it lives in this browser only on the blockchain
Who sees it only you, in this browser everyone, on your profile and on its own page
Other devices no yes, on every device you connect the wallet to
Wallet needed no yes
Cost free the network fee only, about 0.001 ALGO per note (a note holds up to 50 changes)
Changes instant after the transaction is confirmed
History none; deleting removes it every change stays on the blockchain

Private lists are kept in your browser’s storage, one set per network. They are free, instant and seen by nobody else, and they work without a wallet. Other devices and other browsers do not have them, and clearing this site’s data in the browser removes them.

A public list is recorded on the blockchain without the Cabdell contract: the changes are written in the note (a short text field that every Algorand transaction can carry) of a payment of 0 ALGO from your address to itself. The note starts with ariadne/lists/<application id>: followed by the changes (name or describe a list, add or remove articles, delete it). Because only you can sign from your address, only you can change your lists. The Cabdell indexer reads these notes and shows the lists on your profile (see What is on the blockchain).

Each note costs only the network fee, about 0.001 ALGO, and holds up to 50 changes; when you save several lists at once, your wallet signs up to 16 notes together. There is no storage deposit.

Limits:

Limit Value
Lists per address 100
Articles per list 1 000
List name 80 characters
Description 280 characters

A change that breaks a rule (for example an article that does not exist) changes nothing.

Save appears in the reader tools of every article page (next to Cite and Copy link) and, as a small button, on every article in the search results. It reads Saved when the article is in one of your private lists.

  1. Press Save. The dialog Save to a list shows your lists in two groups: Private · this browser and Public · on chain.
  2. Tick or untick private lists: the change is made at once.
  3. Tick or untick public lists: each change is marked “(not saved yet)”. Press Save public lists to see the cost and sign all of them with one signature.
  4. To make a new list, press + New list, write a Name and an optional Description, and choose “Private: only in this browser, free” or “Public: on your profile, on chain” (public needs a connected wallet). Press Create list. The article is put in the new list: at once for a private list; for a public one, the new list is saved with your other public changes when you press Save public lists.
  5. Press Done.

Open your profile and choose the Lists tab. Without a wallet, Profile in the menu shows your private lists.

Public lists are visible to everyone. On your own profile you can:

  • press + New list to create one (then add articles with Save on each article);
  • press Edit on a list to change its name or description, or tick Delete this list, then sign Save changes or Delete list.

Private lists appear only on your own profile, in this browser. You can:

  • press + New private list;
  • Show the articles and Remove one;
  • Edit to rename it or Delete list;
  • Make public: one signature puts the list and its articles on the blockchain, then the private copy is removed from this browser.

Each public list has its own page to share, https://cabdell.press/testnet/u/<address>/lists/<id> on TestNet. There its owner finds Manage this list to rename it, remove articles or delete it, all in one signature.

Every list (a private list, the card of a public list on a profile, or the page of a public list) has a Bibliography button. It cites all the articles of the list at once (DECISIONS D-123).

  1. Press Bibliography.

  2. Choose the Format: APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago (author-date), Harvard, Vancouver, IEEE, BibTeX, or RIS (Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote). It starts on your citation default, the one you chose in Cite on an article.

  3. Choose Sort by:

    • Author (A–Z), then year
    • Year, newest first
    • Year, oldest first
    • Title (A–Z)
    • Order of the list

    Ties are sorted by author, then year, then title, ignoring accents and case. Your choice is remembered in this browser.

  4. Press Copy, or Download the file: .bib for BibTeX, .ris for RIS, .txt for the other formats, named after the list.

How the entries are written:

  • Vancouver entries are numbered 1., 2.… and IEEE entries [1], [2]… in the order shown.
  • BibTeX and RIS give one record after the other, ready for a reference manager.
  • Each article is cited at its current version, with its DOI when an author declared one that Cabdell can rely on (see Get a DOI with Zenodo).
  • Authors appear as Cabdell knows them: the name of their verified ORCID record, else their NFD name, else their address (see Cite an article for how names are read).
